American Falls, one of the three waterfalls located on Niagara River, attracts tourists with its natural beauty and grandeur. The falls were formed around 10,000 years ago during the last ice age. Unlike its neighboring waterfall, Horseshoe Falls, American Falls allows visitors to see the falls up close and even walk on a platform directly adjacent to the waterfall. It is also possible to take a boat ride up close to the base of the falls on the iconic Maid of the Mist tour. In the 20th century, a famous tightrope walker named Charles Blondin crossed the Niagara Gorge on a tightrope several times, including once carrying his manager on his back. Some of these performances were done adjacent to, and over, American Falls. Additionally, the falls have been featured in countless movies and television shows, including the iconic Marilyn Monroe film "Niagara."
