The National Zoological Park, commonly known as the National Zoo, is a 163-acre zoological park located in Washington, D.C. It is a part of the Smithsonian Institution and is home to over 2,700 animals representing more than 390 species. One of the zoo's most famous residents was a giant panda named Mei Xiang, who gave birth to three cubs that survived to adulthood. The National Zoo has a strong commitment to animal conservation, and it operates the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia, which conducts research and conservation efforts to help preserve endangered species. The zoo is a popular attraction for tourists due to its wide variety of animals, including tigers, lions, gorillas, and many more, as well as its scenic park-like setting.
