St. Peter's Square, or Piazza San Pietro in Italian, is a public square located in Vatican City, Rome, surrounded by two colonnades designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, with a massive obelisk in the center. The square, named after St. Peter, the first bishop of Rome, is also home to one of the world's most famous churches, St. Peter's Basilica, which houses numerous important works of art, including Michelangelo's Pietà. Tourists flock to the square to admire its beautiful architecture, sculptures, and fountains, as well as to attend the papal audience that takes place there every Wednesday. Additionally, the square has a rich history, having been the site of many important events, including the election of popes and other significant ceremonies.
