Barking is a suburban town in the borough of Barking and Dagenham, in Greater London. It's situated about 15km east of central London and has a population of approximately 210,000 people. Barking has a rich history, dating back to the 7th century when it was known as Berecingas. Barking Abbey, a nunnery founded by a Saxon noblewoman in the 7th century, dominated the area until the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century. The ruins of the abbey can be found in Barking Abbey Park, offering visitors a glimpse into Barking's past. In modern times, Barking has undergone significant regenerations, particularly in recent years. The town has seen a vast improvement in transportation infrastructure, with the construction of the Overground, and Crossrail Elizabeth Line service which is expected to open in 2022 connecting it to London and beyond. Barking has a bustling town center, with a number of shops, restaurants and cafes, and a shopping mall, Vicarage Field. There are also a number of parks in the area, such as Barking Park, which is the town's largest green space. One of Barking's notable landmarks is the Barking Learning Centre, a striking, award-winning building that opened in 2008. The center is a community hub, offering a range of services such as a library, IT suites, a performance space, and an art gallery.
