Nuwara Eliya is a charming hill station in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. Often referred to as ‘Little England’, it has a rich history dating back to the 19th century when it was established as a British hill station to escape the heat of the lowlands. Today, it is a popular tourist destination known for its natural beauty, tea plantations, and colorful festivals. Nuwara Eliya boasts of picturesque mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, and stunning scenery that will leave any traveler spellbound. The city is also famous for tea production and has several tea estates and factories where visitors can observe the tea-making process and sample some of the finest teas in the world. Among the most popular ones are the Pedro Tea Estate, Bluefields, and Mackwoods. Apart from its natural beauty, Nuwara Eliya is also famous for its festivals such as the annual Nuwara Eliya horse racing event held in April and the Flower Show held in August. One of the most acclaimed events is the ‘Esala Perahera’, a religious procession held in July or August, which attracts thousands of people from around the world.
