La Cala de Mijas is a charming coastal town located in the province of Malaga, in the region of Andalusia, southern Spain. The town is situated on the Costa del Sol, just 20 km east of Marbella and 25 km south-west of Malaga airport. It stretches around 10 km of coastline and boasts a beautiful sandy beach, crystal clear waters, and a variety of restaurants serving up fresh seafood and traditional Spanish cuisine. The town has a rich history, having been inhabited since the Bronze Age, and was an important fishing village during the Arab rule in the 8th century. The town’s name is derived from the Arabic word “Mixa” which means water channel, and it’s believed that the town was a major trading port for spices and textiles in the past. Today, visitors can still see remnants of the town’s past, including the Torre Vieja watchtower, which was built in the 16th century to protect the town from pirate attacks. Apart from its history, La Cala de Mijas has evolved into a modern town with plenty of activities for tourists to enjoy. Visitors can take a stroll along the coastal walkway, which offers stunning views of the Mediterranean sea, and the town’s popular street market held on Wednesdays and Saturdays provides an opportunity to pick up some souvenirs or local produce. The town is also home to a popular golf resort, La Cala Golf Resort, which offers three 18-hole championship courses and a variety of accommodation options for visitors.
