São Tomé is the capital city of the small island nation of São Tomé and Principe, located in the Gulf of Guinea off the west coast of Africa. The city is known for its picturesque colonial architecture, vibrant markets, and relaxed atmosphere. São Tomé was first discovered by Portuguese explorers in the 15th century and for centuries served as a major center for the slave trade. Today, visitors can explore the city's rich history by visiting landmarks such as the Forte de São Sebastião, a well-preserved 16th-century fort which now houses the National Museum. The Museum showcases the cultural and natural history of São Tomé and Principe, including exhibits on the island's flora and fauna, the legacy of the slave trade, and the country's struggle for independence. In addition to its historical landmarks, São Tomé is also a popular destination for beach lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Best visited during the dry season from June to September, the island is home to stunning beaches such as Praia dos Tamarindos and Praia Micondó, as well as hiking trails through lush rainforests and up to the summit of the island's highest peak, Pico de São Tomé. Visitors can also take a boat trip to nearby Ilhéu das Rolas, a small island on the equator that offers stunning views and great snorkeling opportunities.
