Peniche is a charming seaside city located in central Portugal's Silver Coast, approximately 90 km north of Lisbon. The city has a long and rich history, dating back to Roman times. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Peniche was an important fishing port and a center of the Portuguese fishing industry. Today, it is still a lively fishing town, known for its fresh seafood restaurants and beautiful beaches. One of the most well-known historic attractions in Peniche is the Fort of Peniche, a 16th-century fortress that was used as a political prison during the dictatorship of António de Oliveira Salazar. The fort has since been turned into a museum, where visitors can learn about the history of the prison and the role it played in Portugal's political struggle for democracy. Another popular tourist destination in Peniche is the Berlengas Archipelago, a group of small islands located about 10 km off the coast. The islands are a nature reserve and offer a chance to see endangered species of birds and marine life. Visitors can take a boat tour of the islands or even stay overnight in one of the island's guesthouses. Aside from its historical and natural attractions, Peniche is also well-known for its waves. The city is considered one of the top surfing destinations in Europe, attracting surfers from around the world. The Supertubos Beach in Peniche hosts the World Surf League's annual event, the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal.
