Sapporo is the fifth largest city in Japan, located on the northern island of Hokkaido. It is known for its winter activities, including skiing and the annual Sapporo Snow Festival. The city has a rich history, with its name meaning "a large river flowing through a plain" in the Ainu language, the indigenous people of Hokkaido. The city was founded in 1869 by settlers from Japan's main island, Honshu. It quickly began to flourish and by the early 20th century, had become a center for agriculture and industry. Sapporo hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics, putting it on the global map. Today, the city is home to more than 1.9 million people and is a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists, especially during the winter months. One of the most popular attractions in Sapporo is the Sapporo Snow Festival, which takes place every February. The festival features elaborately designed and carved snow sculptures, as well as ice sculptures and other snowy activities. Another popular attraction is the Sapporo Beer Museum, which showcases the history of beer brewing in Sapporo and the process of beer production. Visitors can enjoy a tasting session and learn about the different types of beer produced in Sapporo. Aside from these major landmarks, there are also plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, including skiing and snowboarding at nearby ski resorts, hiking at Mount Moiwa, and cycling along the banks of the Toyohira River. The city is also famous for its cuisine, particularly its seafood and ramen noodles. Guest houses and hotels are readily available to accommodate travelers from around the world.
