Bukit Lawang is a small village located in the province of North Sumatra, Indonesia. It is a popular destination for travelers who want to experience the beauty of the Indonesian rainforest and the chance to spot the rare Sumatran orangutan, which can only be found in this area. The village is situated on the banks of the Bohorok River and is surrounded by the lush greenery of Gunung Leuser National Park. Bukit Lawang was originally founded as a rehabilitation center for orangutans in the 1970s. The center worked to rehabilitate and release orangutans that had been captured or kept as pets back into the wild. Today, the center is still in operation as a sanctuary for orangutans, and visitors can take guided tours to see these magnificent creatures up close. In addition to the orangutans, Gunung Leuser National Park is home to a variety of other animals, including gibbons, macaques, and numerous bird species. Visitors can take guided treks through the rainforest to spot these animals and enjoy the breathtaking views of the park. For those seeking a more adrenaline-fueled adventure, river rafting and tubing are also popular activities. The village of Bukit Lawang is small and quaint, with a few restaurants, guesthouses, and souvenir shops. It is a peaceful place to unwind and connect with nature. However, it is important to note that the village was severely damaged by a flood in 2003 and is still in the process of recovering. Despite this, the charming village and its natural wonders continue to attract visitors from all over the world.
