Helsinki is the capital and largest city of Finland, located on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland, facing the Baltic Sea. The city was founded in 1550 by King Gustav I Vasa of Sweden. It remained a small town until the early 19th century when it became the capital of the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland within the Russian Empire. The city gained its independence and was named the capital of the Republic of Finland in 1917.
