Santiago, or Santiago de Chile, is the capital and largest city of Chile. It is located in a basin surrounded by the Andes mountains which provide a beautiful backdrop to the city. Santiago is a vibrant cultural and economic center of the country, with a rich history and numerous attractions for visitors. It has been inhabited for over 10,000 years, with evidence of Paleo-Indians and the Inca Empire found in the area. The city was founded in 1541 by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia and quickly became an important center of commerce and culture in the region.
