Santiago, or Santiago de Chile, is the capital and largest city of Chile. It is located in a basin surrounded by the Andes mountains which provide a beautiful backdrop to the city. Santiago is a vibrant cultural and economic center of the country, with a rich history and numerous attractions for visitors. It has been inhabited for over 10,000 years, with evidence of Paleo-Indians and the Inca Empire found in the area. The city was founded in 1541 by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia and quickly became an important center of commerce and culture in the region. 

The historic center of Santiago, known as the Centro Histórico, is home to many colonial-era constructions and landmarks, including the Plaza de Armas, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the National Historical Museum. Additionally, the city boasts numerous museums and cultural centers, including the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art, the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, and the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center. The Cerro San Cristobal is a dazzling hill that rises over 800 meters above the city. Travelers can take a funicular to the top of the hill, where they can enjoy panoramic city vistas and explore the park and zoo located there. 

Santiago is also celebrated for its famous street art scene, with murals and graffiti found throughout the city. Tourists can take a guided tour to learn more about the artists and the social and political themes reflected in their work. Moreover, the city is a food lover's paradise, with a thriving culinary scene featuring traditional Chilean dishes as well as international cuisine. Visitors should try local specialties such as empanadas, pastel de choclo, and mote con huesillo. The Central Market is a great place to sample fresh seafood, while Bellavista and Lastarria neighborhoods are known for their trendy restaurants and bars.
