Sofia is the capital and largest city in Bulgaria, located in the western part of the country. It is a vibrant city that combines the old with the new, featuring a mix of modern architecture and ancient ruins. The first settlement dates back to the 8th century BC, with Thracian tribes inhabiting the area. Later, it was conquered by the Romans and became an important commercial and cultural center. Sofia was also part of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires before finally gaining its independence in 1878. The city boasts many architectural landmarks and cultural attractions, such as the 4th-century Rotunda of St. George, the 6th-century St. Sofia Church, and the 10th-century Boyana Church, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Other notable landmarks include the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the world, and the National Palace of Culture, which hosts various events and exhibitions throughout the year. For a scenic view of the city, visitors can go up to the Vitosha Mountain, located just outside Sofia. Sofia also has a rich cultural scene, with numerous museums, theaters, and galleries. The National Museum of History contains exhibits showcasing Bulgaria's ancient and medieval history, while the National Art Gallery features works by famous Bulgarian artists.
