Plovdiv is a city located in south-central Bulgaria and is the country’s second-largest city. The city boasts a rich history that dates back to 4000 BC when the Thracians founded a settlement on the three hills that dominate the city skyline today. Plovdiv has been ruled by numerous powers throughout the centuries including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans, who have all left a mark on the city's unique architecture. One of Plovdiv's main attractions is its well-preserved old town, which is known as the "Old Town of Plovdiv." It is situated on one of the three hills, and it is a maze of cobblestone streets lined with colorful, restored 19th-century homes. Another must-see attraction in Plovdiv is the Ancient Roman Theatre, which is one of the world's best-preserved ancient theaters. It was built in the first century AD and could seat 6,000 spectators. Plovdiv has also become known for its vibrant arts and cultural scene. Every September, the city hosts the international arts festival "Night of the Museums and Galleries" which attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world. Additionally, Plovdiv has been named the European Capital of Culture for 2019, which means that the city is hosting a series of events and exhibitions throughout the year to showcase its cultural heritage.
