Hampton University is a historically black university located in Hampton, Virginia. Founded in 1868, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious HBCUs in the United States. With a strong emphasis on leadership development and community service, Hampton University has produced a number of notable alumni including Booker T. Washington, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Oprah Winfrey.

For tourists visiting Hampton, a visit to Hampton University is a must. The campus is home to several historic buildings including the Emancipation Oak, which is where the first Southern reading of President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation took place in 1863. The Hampton University Museum is also located on campus and is the oldest African American museum in the United States.
